Timepiece — A Conceptual Exercise
Students will design a device for tracking time. Possibilities could include a watch, wall clock, calendar, installation or other apparatus used for measuring time.
Preliminary
–Consider Time: Before beginning, students should fully examine time as a concept. What is it? How is it constructed? Why is it constructed as such? How is it experienced and systematized?
–Look: Examine past and current examples of time keeping, focus on finding trends and examples that come from a number of documented sources.
–Conceptualize: With an understanding of time as a concept and what has gone before, consider the problem of your timepiece. Focus your research and creativity through the design process to meet the challenge presented by time as a concept, answer its questions and design an instrument that meets the need.
–Make it different.
